Katie has a computer from SET-BC with a head switch for access. She uses the head switch to turn pages of accessible books, complete activities in Clicker 4, and change slides in PowerPoint. Katie and her educational assistant Mrs. Tutte created a powerpoint presentation called “Shady Creek Trails” about a school field trip. Read More

In the summer of 2007, 4 teams of rugged campers; the Inconvenient Youths, the Suzuki Squad, the Kyoto Crew and the Carbon Cartel braved daily eco challenges, pudding eating contests, talent shows and more. Thanks to the tireless efforts of these campers and their friends, the Teen Tech Camp of 2007 is brought to you right here on Virtual Voices Village for your endless enjoyment. There’s a new face on the Virtual Voices Village project, and that face happens to be mine. Although I only just arrived at SET-BC, I’ve been in the background of the project since nearly the beginning. My contributions include being part of the initial design session, and more recently, submitting an entry to the first digital publishing contest. The article I wrote was about my school, and oddly enough, that’s the reason I’m here today. The grade 10 and 11 classes at the Inter-A program [my school] are participating in a two or three week work experience placement. This is an opportunity for students, like me, to get a job and learn what it’s like to actually be part of the workforce. I’m looking forward to working with the team and I’m sure you see some of work in the near future.

The RBC Olympians Experience was held at the Vancouver Art Gallery from June 15-17, 2007. During this three day event, a tent was setup on the grounds of the Vancouver Art Gallery where displays describing Canada’s Olympic history were shown. There were also several interactive features including a hockey puck target practice booth, a snowboard balance display & a podium where visitors could have their photos taken with Canadian Olympic athletes.
Outside the tent there was a trampoline setup where Canadian Winter athletes could show off their skills. Given that many of the Nordic events such as ski jumping & snowboarding require participants to perform acrobatics while in the air, a trampoline is the perfect venue for showcasing their skills off the mountain & during summer months.
RBC sponsored the Olympians Experience events as the show traveled to five different British Columbia cities. This event provided the opportunity for attendees to get up close to the talented Canadian Athletes whose skill & dedication to sport will take them to the Olympic Games in 2010.

On December 1st, 2006 the Vancouver Board of Trade held a lunch meeting celebrating the 25th anniversary of the United Nations Year of the Disabled Person. Guest speakers at the luncheon included Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan, Minister of Employment and Income Assistance Claude Richmond, Western Canada Retail Council Chair Kevin Evans and Carla Qualtrough, Director Sport Tourism and Inclusion Initiatives with 2010 Legacies Now.
The content of the speeches consisted mainly of discussing employment issues that face people with disabilities. Claude Richmond highlighted the 10 By 10 initiative, where the British Columbia Government has committed to increasing the number of people with disabilities who are employed by ten percent by the year 2010. Kevin Evans spoke of how disabled people represent an under utilized resource and how disabled persons can help fill job positions in the looming skill shortage.
Overall, the event had a large focus on employment and access issues. A major theme was “We’ve come a long way, but we still have a long way to go”. After the event, attendees were able to approach the speakers to talk with them on a personal basis and photos were taken with attendees and speakers
