Student Created Accessible Books
Katie and Erin Collaborates in creating an Accessible Book, "Shady Creek Trails"

Katie has a computer from SET-BC with a head switch for access. She uses the head switch to turn pages of accessible books, complete activities in Clicker 4, and change slides in PowerPoint. Katie and her educational assistant Mrs. Tutte created a powerpoint presentation called “Shady Creek Trials” about a school field trip. Katie participated by answering 2-choice or yes/no questions about all the characters and events in the story. For example, “Do you want the Boy to be called Mark or Henry?” or “Are they going across the bridge next?” One of Katie’s friends, Erin, drew all the pictures. Katie and Erin collaborated on what should be shown in the pictures. The powerpoint presentation was narrated by Mrs. Tutte and Katie has presented it to different classes at her school. SET-BC is very pleased to add Katie’s book to the collection of student authored accessible books. Katie is building her communication skills with a Voice Output Communication Aid (VOCA). Katie recently got a MightyMo Communication Device that holds pre-recorded messages. The MightyMo shows 9 message buttons at a time. Clicking on a button will either speak a message or take Katie to a new page with 9 messages on it. Katie uses her head switch to move from button to button and then pauses to ‘choose’ the message. One of Katie’s favourite activities is to share news from home with her class.
